The Cubs Clinch...and We Were There!

Sarah and I went to Cincinatti, like 30,000 other Cubs fans this past weekend to watch our Cubbies win the NL Central Division. Zambrano pitched a 6-0 shutout and on Saturday, Hill pitched a no hitter through 5 1/3 innings. Cubbies play Arizona (how ironic) on Wednesday for a best of 5 series. Oh, to have a million dollars to be able to pay to see them play at Wrigley, eh?

Friday night, we arrived just as the Cubs were taking batting practice and Kerry Wood tossed me a ball as they were finishing up. It's my first ball ever caught at a game. It was pretty cool. And no, I didn't give it to a kid. I haven't seen any kids offerin' me up a baseball lately!

One extra special thing about this trip was that we were able to meet up with my best man, Bee-Rown. We failed to get a pic for the blog, but I wanted to mention him as he is 300 of the current 318 visitors. Mom is the other 18. Whoop needs to get himself a blog, too.

Deer, Zoo, Cars, Pumpkins, and Dad in a Sombrero

Visit the photos for this particular blog here: http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd192/dcmmcm07/Saturday%209%2022/?start=all

This past weekend (Saturday, September 22), Sarah, the kids, and I celebrated my dad's 57th birthday in Evansville. Before we went to visit them, we had some visitors in our very own back yard. There were 2 deer who wandered into our yard and came as close as our swingset! We were able to se them for quite a while from the view in our house until they spotted us...
Later that day we went to the Evansville Zoo. This particular day, there was a car show with many awesome cars.

Thank goodness we packed our strollers for the kids because it was hot (97 degrees) and there were many hills throughout the zoo. There are some pics of the animals in the Evansville Zoo along with one particular one of me trying to get a little friendly with a certain giraffe.

Finally, that afternoon, we celebrated Dad's birthday at the Hacienda restaurant. Gracie wrote him a "special" card and read it to him, and we all gave him a new pair of tennis shoes. Ah...at least it wasn't a tie or set of spark plugs, huh? We were also able to have the waitresses at Hacienda come out and sing to him as well as present him with a fitting Mexican sombrero...
Gracie then decided to try it on for herself....Alex was scared of it! Happy Birthday Papaw!

Finally, that Sunday the kids painted their own pumpkins for October...aren't they cute?!

Poetry

There once was a girl named Gracie Lou
Who, one day, stepped in her Daddy's shoe.
She thought her feet were big and strong,
Until two of hers fit into just one, so long.

Her daddy's foot was large it did occur,
How cute it is now, but wait for the blur
Her daddy's foot was once so small;
And Gracie will soon be twenty, in college, and tall.

Labor Day Weekend 2007

On Labor Day Weekend this year, Sarah and I went to St. Louis to see a Cards/Reds baseball game. It was great weather clear and around 75 degrees...perfect weather to watch a baseball game. Funny thing...we went to see the Cardinals and Reds and came back CUBS fans! That's right. D-Backs are long gone since i can't see any games and our favorite player (former Mr. Cub) is retired now. Here are some pictures from the game.

We stayed at Union Station (Hyatt) which was super-nice. Here are some pics from the hotel lobby.

Later that weekend, we visited with some friends from Radcliff. Sarah, Gracie, Alex, and I all swam at Ms. Donna's house with Donna, Mindi, Brian, Ed, Manyana, Nadine, Leon, Shirley, Gary, and others. We forgot to take pics at Donna's! Later that day we met Jim, Beth, Brett, Cord, and Jen for ice cream at our DQ! Here are some pics from that night. Yes, that IS Jim Wetzel in rare form after a small caramel sundae. Hate to see him after eating chocolate! Donna, you may want to put these on the church screen some Sunday! :)

Death of A Legend

"Italian Tenor Pavarotti Dies at Age 71
Sept. 6, 2007, 10:45 AM EST

The Associated Press

ROME -- Luciano Pavarotti, opera's biggest superstar of the late 20th century, died Thursday. He was 71. He was the son of a singing baker and became the king of the high C's.
Pavarotti, who had been diagnosed last year with pancreatic cancer, died at his home in his native Modena at 5 a.m., his manager told The Associated Press in an e-mailed statement. His wife, Nicoletta, four daughters and sister were among those at his side, manager Terri Robson said.
"In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness," Robson said.
Pavarotti's charismatic persona and ebullient showmanship — but most of all his creamy and powerful voice — made him the most celebrated tenor since the great Enrico Caruso and one of the few opera singers to win crossover fame as a popular superstar.
For serious fans, the unforced beauty and thrilling urgency of Pavarotti's voice made him the ideal interpreter of the Italian lyric repertory. For millions more, his thrilling performances of standards like "Nessun Dorma" from Puccini's "Turandot" came to represent what opera is all about.
"Nessun Dorma" turned out to be Pavarotti's last aria, sung at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Turin in February 2006. His farewell to opera was in Puccini's "Tosca" at New York's Metropolitan in March 2004.
Instantly recognizable from his charcoal black beard and tuxedo-busting girth, Pavarotti radiated an intangible magic that helped him win hearts in a way Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras — his partners in the hugely popular "Three Tenors" concerts — never quite could.
"I always admired the God-given glory of his voice — that unmistakable special timbre from the bottom up to the very top of the tenor range," Domingo said in a statement from Los Angeles."

---As a student of music (classical emphasis in the undergraduate studies), I stood in awe each time I heard the voice of Pavarotti. Every time he sung, I would wonder what it felt like to be able to sing those notes. Not just sing those notes, but sing them naturally, without force or strain. With his unique personality, Pavarotti was able to communicate the notes on the sheet music into a story, a novel, which took you to a different place or time. Recently, as Pavarotti battled cancer, he was quoted saying, "Now I only need God's help - and it really seems to me that he is giving it to me." I pray that he knew Christ and that he sang his song to the One who gave the gift of music to him. Some say that singing is like praying twice. So, if Pavarotti sang his prayers and was born-again, heaven has one of the best tenors ever to grace it's concert halls.
